Here is the brief summary of rules from our Convention Unit 18:

  • “and” = “they”
  • “or” = ignore what’s furthest from the verb
  • “nor” = ignore what’s furthest from the verb
  • When the sentence has an intervening phrase (unnecessary parts of a sentence, with commas before and after, sort of like parenthetical statements), ignore the intervening phrase to find the correct verb.
